In this KE, you will design a neighbourhood square in Braunschweig's Weststadt district, with a special focus on visualizing and communicating your idea with the help of virtual reality (VR). The KE is part of the research project "Co-Adapted Braunschweig" (COABS), which investigates the consequences of climate change for Braunschweig, develops planning measures to adapt to it and involves citizens in the development in public events and co-creative formats.
The design area is an open space between three residential buildings that is already particularly vulnerable to the consequences of heat, heavy rainfall and flooding. As in many large housing estates, there is a lack of high-quality outdoor recreational spaces in the neighborhood - the site is currently more of a distance green than an appropriated urban space. Your task is therefore to make it more climate-resilient and transform it into a neighborhood square. To this end, you will research projects, technologies and materials that promote cooling through shading and evaporation, as well as the infiltration and reuse of rainwater and enable a higher quality of stay in the urban space. At the same time, you will acquire basic knowledge of Twin Motion software with our support in order to bring your design to life with the help of VR.
