The site of the former Zobel market garden in Braunschweig's Weststadt district forms the starting point for addressing the question of how a mixed-use quarter with maximum social added value and a minimum ecological footprint can be created in times of climate crisis. As the basis for the design, a room program is being developed that provides for residential, commercial and leisure uses and enables an appropriate ratio of building height and structural density to generous green and open spaces. Resource efficiency as a central design principle should already be central to the urban planning concept, in the positioning, programming and organisation of the buildings and open spaces. For example, a separate position is to be developed for the former market garden and the extent to which it or parts of it can continue to be used is to be examined. Sufficient daylight and solar heat gains are to be provided in winter and cooling through shading, urban design affective water and natural ventilation in summer. One focus of the design is on the mix in the district, whereby synergies between heterogeneous uses such as living and local, compatible businesses are to be sought and implemented both in terms of urban planning and architecture.
An excursion to Berlin will provide fundamentals to the Urban Design Studio, during which the focus will be on visiting exemplary mixed-use urban development.
