The city of Salzgitter is planning a new mixed-use district on the Schäferberg, an agricultural plot of land directly adjacent to the motorway on the outskirts of Braunschweig. We would like to pick up this task in order to support the city with our ideas in order to examine the potentials of local development as well as the possibilities of creating vivid urban structures within rural areas. We would like to address both, spatial strategies for energy and climate infrastructure, as well as sustainable dimensions of food supply and mobility.
How can land potential be exploited and how can the coexistence of trade, production, energy supply, living and working be captured in terms of urban planning and architecture? How far can and may settlement areas expand onto greenfield sites? What does resource-saving construction mean for urban planning, also with regard to open space planning, climate and nature protection and agricultural land? We would like to offer you the possibility of experiencing a sense of the responsibility we hold as architects and urban planners in direct exchange with the city planning representatives of Salzgitter in order to explore the potentials and possibilities of a lively urban structure in rural areas.
