Many challenges faced by today's society, culture, politics and economy can be related to our future life in cities. Worldwide as well as in Germany, the majority of the population lives in cities or urban regions, which, due to foreseeable increasing urbanization and globalization processes, place complex demands on existing urban structures and future new planning. Whether climate adaptation, energy transition, employment, affordable housing, sustainable mobility, immigration or demographic change - a holistic inter- and transdisciplinary approach is needed to address the challenges of sustainable urban development.
In order to address these challenges scientifically, the TU Braunschweig has established the core research area: "Future City", which provides an umbrella for new research fields and collaborations both in the region and internationally.
Across all faculties, key scientific areas have been grouped into five visions, each of which is assigned to a number of specialized research fields. These form a concrete framework for both application-oriented and fundamental research projects by formulating underlying research questions, the work program and the methodology. Each research field is designed by two or more principal investigators and already has reference projects. Both the projects and the research fields will be regularly reviewed to ensure that they are progressing in line with the visions that have been developed.
