The DFG Research-group 2021 is an association of a number of institutes of several universities and research facilities who investigate the mechanisms by which nanoscale particulate additives influence the properties of fibre-reinforced composites. A preceding project (Virtual Institute “Nanotechnology in Polymer-Composite-Materials”) was able to proof the high potential of fibre-reinforced nanocomposites. In order to fully exploit this potential a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which nanoparticulate additives, their material, surface modification and disperse properties affect material properties needs to be gained. At the same time the processability along the demanding process chain needs to be ensured. The viscosity of nanoparticulate suspensions is not only a key property during the dispersion step but also for the processability during every other step along the process chain. Nevertheless the fundamental understanding for the origin of the viscosities severe dependence on the solids content, the chosen material and its morphology is still lacking. At the Institute for Particle Technology efforts are taken to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these phenomenons by means of experimental work as well as coupled CFD-DEM simulations.
