The disposal of highly radioactive waste is a socially and technically complex task. In Germany, the commission “Storage of highly radioactive waste” recommended the disposal method “final disposal with reversibility”. This includes, among other things, consideration of a possible retrieval of the waste. The Institute of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering is working on issues relating to retrieval and monitoring in the TRANSENS joint project. In addition to the technical perspective, TRANSENS aims to find new perspectives and solutions to the problem by involving external experts and laypersons with their experience.
The collaboration of people with research-related and non-research-related expertise creates a new perspective on the issue of retrieval of highly radioactive waste. This leads to a more holistic assessment of the consequences of the chosen approach of “final disposal with reversibility”.
