Institute of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering | IGG-TUBS

The Institute of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (formerly the Institute for Foundation Engineering and Soil Mechanics (1974 to 2019)) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig (IGG) is engaged in research and teaching in the fields of geotechnics, geomechanics, and underground cavity construction. We conduct basic and applied research on current issues such as offshore wind energy or the deep disposal of hazardous substances.

As an institute of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Sciences, we offer courses for the study programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Civil Engineering. In the bachelor's programs, students are taught the fundamentals of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and underground construction. In the master's programs, more specialized content through lectures, exercises, excursions, and internships follows. Additionally, we supervise bachelor's and master's theses as well as project works, allowing students to participate in the institute's research or practical activities.

For the private sector, IGG provides engineering services and industrial research. Our services include geotechnical measurements and numerical modeling of geotechnical problems. Extensive laboratory investigations on soil and rock mechanical issues complement our service portfolio.

Furthermore, IGG is a member of the Coastal Research Centre (FZK), which coordinates coastal research at the Leibniz University Hannover and the Tecnische Universität Braunschweig, promoting interdisciplinary, national, and international collaboration. With the Large Wave Channel (GWK), operational since 1983, FZK has access to the world's largest publicly accessible research facility of its kind. Through excellent cooperation among the participating institutes, existing research facilities are optimally utilized, significantly enhancing the education of young scientists in hydraulic engineering and coastal engineering.
