Increasing urbanization, congestion and pollution are worldwide challenges human kind is facing in the 21st century. Hence smart, green, efficient and integrated mobility solutions are one of society’s grand challenges. Research in new mobility systems require a fundamentally different approach in order to respond to the changing demands of society. Key considerations in this transformation are safety, environmental compatibility (e.g. energy, budget, noise, emissions) and new business models (e.g. leasing, shared- / hailing-mobility, mobility ecosystem subscriptions).
Urban air mobility (UAM) is one of the areas of research and development for future transportation. The Chair of Aircraft Design is actively working with partners on new designs and solution for fully electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) in order to provide a new and innovative mobility-solution in the third dimension in the near future. The research includes assessment of potential eVTOL configuration, design space exploration of potential future eVTOL configurations, and conceptual design and optimization of future eVTOL concepts.
