Five fruit trees were planted on the grounds of the school garden at the North Campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig. This was made possible by the donation of the company Haltern & Kaufmann, which both provided the trees and carried out the planting. The school garden is supervised by the research assistants Dagmar Hinrichs and Konstantin Klingenberg of the Institute for the Didactics of Natural Sciences (IFdN), Department of Biology and Didactics of Biology, at the TU Braunschweig. It offers students of biology and science education in particular the opportunity to dovetail the theory of school gardening with practical experience during their studies. This is an important task in teacher training, as many schools in Lower Saxony have a school garden. Thus, prospective teachers should have practical and theoretical competences, which they acquire at the IFdN in independent project work. School gardening spans a wide range of learning and educational options. Keywords include native biodiversity, education for sustainable development and healthy nutrition.
