Energy-efficient building renovation is a constant theme in the construction industry. In the year 2011, approximately 70% of buildings constructed before 1979 still lacked insulation. This implies that building renovation will play a significant role in future construction activities in Germany. The ecological aspects of insulation are well-known, and over 90% of the used insulation materials are synthetic, such as polystyrenes or polyurethanes. Despite having a positive ecological footprint, lignocellulosic insulation materials are only used on a small scale. The objective of this work is to analyse the insulation materials market in Germany and the EU, as well as to examine technical challenges in office and residential building renovation. The aim is to compare organic insulation materials (synthetic and natural-based) and identify potential new applications for lignocellulosic insulation materials.
