Modern teaching in the form of so-called blended learning involves the combination of different teaching methods and the use of different media. In the Department of Soil Science and Soil Physics, teaching videos have been used since the summer semester 2020. The use of multimedia in teaching was planned for this semester anyway and was successfully launched as part of the BoDig project (teaching videos and digital media in soil science courses). The Corona-Krisa has rapidly accelerated the use of digital teaching media.
In the first video, Dr Kai Germer and Dr Sascha Iden explain the concept behind the BoDig project and the digital teaching materials created in the project.
The Soils4us project was carried out in 2017. It was a research-oriented teaching and learning project in which students learned and deepened a broad and interlocked range of state-of-the-art soil science field and laboratory methods, including modelling, based on real current research questions. In addition to teaching subject-specific competences, important interdisciplinary competences were acquired through an innovative cross-module learning and working structure. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Thünen Institute for Agricultural Climate Protection. The content dealt with the influence of land use changes on carbon stocks in the soil, which play a decisive role in the global carbon cycle and thus in climate change.
In the video, Dr Kai Germer explains the concept and the course of the project. In addition, milestones of the project such as sampling in the field, monitoring of the soil water balance and the final symposium are presented.
