Starting your mechanical engineering studies? Congratulations! To ensure you arrive well-prepared, we offer our Orientation Unit (OE) – your perfect introduction to university life. Here, you will get to know the university, the city, and your new fellow students. We have also planned several events for you.
You can find all the information below.
Welcome to TU Braunschweig!
As the Student Council of Mechanical Engineering, we warmly welcome you to the Technical University of Carolo-Wilhelmina in Braunschweig. We are delighted that you have chosen one of our engineering programs at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
To make your start into your studies easier and sweeter, we have organized a series of introductory events for all first-year students. These will take place in week 14 (March 31 - April 4, 2025), the week before regular lectures begin.
The first information event for the orientation phase will already take place on March 31 at 11 AM in the AudiMax. Right after this lecture, your Orientation Unit (OE) begins, during which you will be grouped with other students from your program into tutor groups. In these groups, you will get to know the university and the city during the orientation unit. We have also planned some events – you will find out exactly what these involve at the beginning of the OE. But let us reveal one thing: after the first lecture, we will be outside. Leave the high heels or jacket at home and dress according to the weather.
You should arrange for a place to stay in Braunschweig or the surrounding area during the orientation phase, as there will be some evening events.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time via email. We wish you a successful start to your studies!

Make this semester the best time of your studies - as a tutor for the first-year students
The training of bachelor students as first-year tutors has been conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Psychology for many years. Since 2018, tutors for master's first-year students have also been trained. Together with the future tutors and a research assistant, we travel to a youth hostel where the tutors are trained for four days by team leaders, who are members of the student council.
The main goal of the weekend is to form a team from a large group of students who barely know each other. Getting-to-know-you activities are emphasized during the four days. After all, the tutors should not only get to know each other but also learn the tools of the trade on how to introduce first-year students well into their new phase of life. The psychological component plays an important role in this. Thus, the tutors are trained to think about people's behaviors rather than forming a premature opinion. Furthermore, a good tutor must not only learn how to deal with criticism but also how to give feedback. To acquire these soft skills, role-playing games are helpful, which are repeatedly used during the tutor training.
After the last plenary session of the day, the evening transitions into the "cozy" part. During this social gathering, with games and music, it becomes possible to engage in conversations with the tutors of the cohort. Then, the team leaders also mix among the tutors. It is at this point that it becomes clear that the student council members are not just giving directives but are part of the team, with whom you can have a lot of fun.
Each morning, the program starts at 9:00 AM. In addition to psychological and team-building measures, the weekend also provides knowledge about the university, its institutions, and committees. Moreover, "acting confidently despite complete cluelessness" is practiced. However, the highlight of the four-day trip is the last seminar of the weekend. This is where it becomes apparent whether the learned knowledge can be applied. At the end of the weekend, many positive experiences remain, newly learned social skills, new friendships, a team that cannot be easily shaken, and, of course, the anticipation for the orientation unit - the best time of the studies.
Please READ FIRST, then register!
Registration for the tutor weekend is closed for this year.
First and foremost, we appreciate your interest in becoming a Bachelor tutor. Working as a tutor will not only be a lot of fun but will also earn you 2 ECTS in interdisciplinary skills. To ensure everything runs smoothly, here are the key details:
Also, take a look at the Tutor FAQ. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at fsmb-oe(at)web.de.

What is a tutor?
Tutors are upper-semester students who supervise a group of "freshers" (first-semester students), typically in pairs or, in exceptional cases, in trios. (Applications from pairs are preferred!)
How long does this last?
A lifetime! If things go well, it can lead to long-lasting connections. Throughout the course of their studies, tutors meet with their group occasionally to exchange information and learning materials.
Really? That wasn't my experience...
We strive to find motivated and committed tutors. However, there are occasionally some "lazy ones." Let us know if that happens to you!
Also, there have been times when the freshers simply don't take advantage of this offer. In that case: it's their loss!
What else is involved?
In addition to key skills like rhetoric and group dynamics, topic-centered interactions and basic tutor knowledge are also part of the program. Here you'll learn more about your BPO (examination regulations), so you can answer the freshers' questions.
What do I get in return?
Experience, new friends, fun, and of course, a thorough understanding of the BPO and the university.
For several years, we have conducted the tutor training in cooperation with the Institute of Psychology, specifically the Department of Work, Organizational, and Social Psychology, as a course listed in the "pool directory." Under certain conditions, your commitment as a tutor is rewarded with 2 credit points, which you can apply in the non-technical (NT) area. However, you must be fully present at the preparation weekend and during all the activities of the orientation event! Those who do not adhere to agreements with us may be excluded from events. You can learn more about this at one of the information events to which we invite all interested parties.
OK, great! When does it start?
Traditionally, we go on the tutor weekend two weeks before the start of the winter semester, where the training takes place. Your own tutors will probably only tell you about the relaxed part of the weekend, which occurs on Friday and Saturday evenings, but there's a tightly scheduled program during the day that should not be underestimated.
I'm an industrial engineering student, but I really want to form a group with my friend who studies mechanical engineering. Is that possible?
Sure! Sometimes that's even very beneficial, as we can then decide at short notice whether you'll lead an industrial engineering group or a mechanical engineering group, depending on where the need is.
Where do I sign up?
Here you can find the tutor registration for Bachelor programs. You can find the tutor registration for Master programs here. Please complete the form fully and remember that your fellow students, with whom you want to lead a tutor group, must also register individually. After registration, we will contact you and invite you to an information event.
What else should I expect? What's the general procedure?
On the first day of lectures, the new students are welcomed by the president. Then the faculty, represented by the Dean of Studies, and the student council introduce themselves. Immediately following this is the first lecture, after which the division into tutor groups takes place. Once this is done, the groups go out to get to know each other before starting the university rally. We will explain everything else in more detail at the tutor weekend.
Can I also sign up as a tutor for the first-year students in the summer semester?
Unfortunately, you cannot sign up for the summer semester. In this case, we as the Mechanical Engineering Student Council, together with dedicated former tutors, take on the task of introducing new students. It should also be noted that the orientation phase in the summer semester is not as extensive as in the winter semester.
