This page contains information for students who started their studies in the winter semester 2014/15 or later. Special documents and forms for the Master's programme (module handbook, admission and examination regulations, etc.), also for students who started their studies before WS 2014/15, can be found on the page Documents.
The Master's programme is based on the undergraduate Bachelor's programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in particular the Bachelor's programme Industrial and Mechanical Engineering.
Standard period of study: 4 Semester
Language: German
Degree: Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Application period:
1st June – 15th July (winter semester)
1st December – 15th January (summer semester)

Energy and Process Engineering | Decision Support |
Automotive Engineering | Service Management |
Aerospace Engineering | Financial Management |
Materials Science | Information Management |
Mechatronics | Marketing |
Production and Systems Engineering | Organisation and Management |

The structure of the Master's programme is shown in the following figure. For detailed information, please refer to the in-depth structure of the programme and the module handbook (MHB).
The Major in Engineering contains modules in an amount of 25 CP. The modules have to be chosen from a catalogue, determined by the chosen major (BPO Annex 1 and Annex 2). The two Majors in Economics consist of two modules in an amount of 10 CP each, 20 CP in total. These are determined by the chosen major.
The combination of certain engineering majors with suitable economics majors leads to the formation of special emphases, which bundle modules in selected areas of competence (see Annex 4 of the MPO Industrial and Mechanical Engineering).
The Elective Modules includes 10 CP, these modules can be freely selected from the entire Master's programme module offer of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (5 CP modules). All modules are listed in Annex 2 of the examination regulations.
The module Scientific Work - Seminar has a volume of 8 CP and includes two seminars from the two selected Economics Majors and the preparation of two seminar papers on a selected topic.
The Master's thesis has a volume of 28 CP and includes preparation of a written thesis including literature research. It concludes with a presentation of the results (2 CP). The processing period is 6 months. Both sub-modules must be passed separately. For the module grade the Master' thesis is weighted with 90 % and the presentation with 10 %. Only those who have passed all examinations and who have successfully completed the Student Research Project can be admitted to the Master's thesis. The Master's thesis can also be written in a company.
Important: The supervisor must be a professor of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Economics of the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Faculty. The supervisor will issue the topic and review the Master's thesis.
The Economics Minor comprises 5 CP. Courses from outside of the two Economics Majors must be taken here.
Teaching programmes in the extent of 7 CP are taken here. These primarily serve the acquisition of methodological and social competences (interdisciplinary qualification with professionalisation) and consist of modules with interdisciplinary and action-oriented offers for the teaching of interdisciplinary qualifications or competences. These modules can be selected from a list drawn up by the examination board and conclude with an attended course. You can also take language courses in the interdisciplinary profile development. It is decisive that the modules may NOT be part of the curricula Master's programme Industrial and Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering and that they MUST conclude with an examination event.
As these subjects are part of your certificate, you should use the opportunity to prove the acquisition of corresponding competences in your certificate. Graded certificates are noted on the report.
The Student Research Project has a volume of 13 CP and must be submitted in written form after a processing time of usually three months. It concludes with a presentation (2 CP) of the results. These primarily serve the acquisition of methodological and social competences (interdisciplinary qualification with professionalisation) and consist of modules with interdisciplinary and action-oriented offers for the teaching of interdisciplinary competences. The Student Research Project can be done at any institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Economics of the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Faculty and will be registered at the supervising institute. The registration and submission dates are also recorded there.
Like the Master's thesis, the Student Research Project can also be written in a company. A professor from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Economics of the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Faculty has to supervise the thesis. The topic of the thesis will be handed out and evaluated by the supervisor.
