Diverse career opportunities with a focus on work and organisational psychology, traffic and engineering psychology
Psychology uses scientific methods to investigate general regularities in cognitive structures and behavioural processes. This knowledge can be used for the design of interactions between people at work, in traffic and in their free time as well as in the interaction of people with technology. There is a correspondingly wide range of career opportunities in industries and organisations, in interaction between people and technology as well as in transport and society.
A special profile
On the basis of your own research into current issues, the Master’s programme in Psychology prepares you in an application-oriented manner for three central areas of practice in psychology:
-
industrial and organisational psychology
-
traffic and engineering psychology
-
psychology and sociotechnical systems
Individual support
Due to the small number of students, you can study under very good supervision and with lots of opportunities for individual development by choosing your area of specialisation. Lectures are not overcrowded and working together in seminars in small groups is possible as the students know each other well. It is also easy to get in touch with lecturers and tutors will provide good support.
A focus on research and practice
Research projects are often carried out in cooperation with national and international universities, research facilities and clinics. In applied research, we cooperate with various facilities and companies in the region. The broad range of topics includes the development of competences, career and coaching, team and leadership, work and organisational design, safety in transport, mobility and the consequences of new technologies for society.
Information on the study programme
With its focus on engineering and economics, TU Braunschweig offers you an ideal environment to study in. The Master’s programme in Psychology starts in the winter semester, so that undergraduate students can continue their studies directly. There are 25 places available per year.
A deeper understanding of the basics and the methodology
The focus of the first two semesters is on deepening the scientific foundations with regard to group dynamics or cognitive processes. This is accompanied by an in-depth study of research methodology and diagnostics. A module on organisational psychology and a research-oriented practical course round off the start of the programme.
Advanced modules - choose your focus!
In the second and third semesters, you have the opportunity to specialise in the following areas:
-
industrial and organisational psychology
-
traffic and engineering psychology
-
psychology and sociotechnical systems
To do this, you will have to select at least three modules of your choice. But if you want to, you can also pursue this in greater depth. In addition, you will choose a supplementary module from an interdisciplinary portfolio. This is complemented by an internship in the third semester that provides insights into professional psychological practice.
Master’s thesis
The last semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, which is usually empirical. You will plan your own study here, conduct it and evaluate it. In doing so, you contribute to the science of “psychology” yourself.
Industrial and Organisational Psychology
Industrial and organisational psychology deals with the question of how workflows and organisational processes and technical systems must be designed so that people can use them without problems at work. Professional tasks include, for example, the selection of suitable personnel for business enterprises, in-house training or measures in the fields of leadership, cooperation, communication and work design. In addition, there are psychological activities in market research and advertising such as the analysis of consumer behaviour.
Traffic and Engineering Psychology
In engineering psychology, you study the interaction between humans and technology. In particular, this involves processes of perception, memory, attention and action control. Fields of application are the design of human-machine interfaces, such as interfaces for the presentation of information and for operation. In traffic psychology, the focus is on distraction in traffic, highly automated vehicles and on cyclists. On the one hand, the aim is to increase road safety, and on the other, to achieve sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility.
Psychology and Sociotechnical Systems
New technologies are not only changing our workplace or the recreational habits of individuals. They are also reshaping social life and society as a whole, as shown by the example of social networks or the Coronavirus crisis, which led to a rise in the importance of online interaction. These socio-psychological and societal implications are at the centre of this third area of specialisation.
Those who have gained experience abroad and speak a foreign language are particularly sought after by the economy. Today, large companies operate globally, research projects are carried out in international teams and specialised literature is written in English. It is therefore important that you take advantage of your studies to gain experience abroad and to professionalise your foreign language skills.
Within the framework of our international university partnerships, we offer you many opportunities to study abroad:
-
Europe: with universities in, for example, Scandinavia, Southern and Eastern Europe
-
North America: with universities in the USA and Canada
-
South America: with universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico
-
Asia: with universities in India, China, Japan and South Korea
