Computer science has a long tradition at TU Braunschweig: in 1972, it was one of the first universities to establish a degree programme in computer science.

The Department of Computer Science offers insights into a wide variety of subdomains—from computer graphics and IT security to medical computer science and robotics.

Equipped with the necessary basic knowledge, you will primarily learn to analyse and abstract problems from a wide variety of application areas and to solve them by developing abstract procedures and processing rules.

Deepen your knowledge according to your own interests

In the Bachelor’s programme in Computer Science you have already laid the foundation on which you will build in the Master’s programme. Now, you will take a closer look at current scientific issues by setting your focus according to your own interests. To do this, you can choose from an extensive range of computer science courses or you can specifically deepen your knowledge in one of the following fields of study:

big data management
automotive informatics
hardware/software system design and analysis
industrial data science
IT security
medical informatics
networked systems
robotics
visual computing

Optionally, you can choose a minor subject such as medicine, aerospace engineering, mechatronics or business administration according to your personal interests and in this way apply your knowledge of computer science across the disciplines. You decide for yourself whether to continue your minor subject from the Bachelor’s degree or take a new one. You will also have the opportunity to practise scientific work within the framework of your own project work and in this way prepare for your Master’s thesis.

Practical relevance and research

In addition to theory, practice will not be neglected: whether seminars, internships or working on research projects at the individual computer science institutes, the teaching and training of so-called key skills are at the forefront. The location of Technische Universität Braunschweig in one of Europe’s research hotspots , with its large research institutes and numerous industrial companies, contributes to the practice-oriented education.

A personal mentor will support you in selecting and compiling your curricula and will also be your contact person throughout your studies. They will be assigned to you during the welcome event, which usually takes place during the first week of lectures. Here you will also get important information about the course of studies, the structure and the contents of the Master’s programme, and get to know your future professors.

At the end of the Master’s programme, you will complete a six-month Master’s thesis, which is an independent scientific research project under professional supervision at one of the computer science institutes.

Today, large companies operate globally, research projects are carried out in international teams and specialised literature is written in English. It is therefore important that you take advantage of your studies to gain experience abroad and to professionalise your foreign language skills.

Thinking in logical-analytical and creative-constructive categories characterises computer scientists. If you enjoyed the scientific-mathematical school subjects, you will have a sound basis. Programming skills are helpful, but not obligatory.

In addition, you should have a willingness to work with other people and an interest in dealing with ways of thinking from other disciplines, because in professional life, teamwork and cooperation with specialists from a wide range of disciplines are common.

Knowledge of English is also becoming increasingly important, as international specialised literature is published almost exclusively in English. No one has to give up studying computer science because of a lack of English skills; however, you should improve your language skills with courses at the TU Language Centre during your studies at the latest.

Computer science now touches (almost) all areas of our daily lives. As a result, the job opportunities for computer science graduates are manifold.
