A stay abroad is a great opportunity to discover the world during your studies and to grow personally and professionally. Many TU students have already embarked on the adventure of a semester abroad. To give them the chance to share their experiences with others and perhaps to motivate them to spend a semester abroad as well, the International House launched a photo competition with the motto "Fernweh" (wanderlust).
The competition was aimed at enrolled students at TU Braunschweig who did a study-related stay abroad in the winter semester 2022/23 or summer semester 2023. From over 75 submitted photos, the jury selected the 5 winning photos, which were awarded prizes and can be seen on the 1st floor of the International House.
We would like to thank all students for their participation and the many great photos submitted!
Annika Traub:
This photo was taken relatively early on in the Erasmus programme, about a month after our arrival. We went canoeing together that day and then climbed a hill for the sunset. The landscape looked amazing and we just sat there and watched the sun go down.
I seized the moment and took this photo. The people in the photo are my best friends from my Erasmus stay. We got to know each other in our first course and were travelling as a clique right from the start. The first month of the Erasmus stay was intense: you had to get to know new people who were like you, so the first month was full of socialising and events. I still remember thinking that evening: Yes, I've made new friends.
The picture makes me nostalgic every time, as it simply expresses so much for me: friendship, new people, leaving the comfort zone, new cultures, foreign language, landscape. Togetherness, freedom. Everything that characterises an Erasmus stay.
This time was very influential for me and I miss Gothenburg and the people very much. I have wanderlust. The friends I made there are for life.
We've always said that it's a friendship in the fast lane. It's only a short time that you spend together, but this time is so intense and filled with so many emotions that you connect with each other in a very deep way. I am very grateful for these people.
Kay Schirin Möbius:
This photo was taken during my trip to Cozumel during the winter holidays of my internship abroad at VW de México.
Cozumel is my favourite destination in Mexico, an island in the Caribbean with beautiful beaches and clear blue water.
For me, the photo symbolises the entire process of planning a stay abroad right through to the actual realisation. Planning a stay abroad is rarely fun, involves a lot of effort and can sometimes be demotivating. Documents are missing, you have to chase after contact persons, you have to take care of the financial aspects and you may also encounter a lack of understanding in your social environment (especially if your destination is Mexico). In the photo, this rather unpleasant part of the stay abroad is represented by the corridor of the run-down building - dark, dirty and chaotic.
However, if you always keep your goal in mind, represented in the photo by the blue sea of the Caribbean, you will be rewarded with a unique experience that eclipses all your previous efforts.
No matter how much planning a stay abroad involves, I personally would want to endure it again and again. The memories and experiences you gain abroad are incomparable to those you make if you stay in the "dark building" for the rest of your life. Of course, not everything will always go perfectly and sometimes you may doubt your own decision, both before and during your stay, but you will also grow personally and benefit in the end.
With this photo, I would therefore like to recommend everyone to accept the dark passage in order to have a unique experience in the end.
Mattis Oberwestberg:
"Why are we doing an Erasmus semester?" I asked my fellow students in Gdansk. Somehow everyone agreed: to develop personally and professionally, to broaden our horizons. But also to get to know new cultures, new languages and new people. Many people longed to leave their familiar surroundings and discover Europe. In other words: wanderlust.
As this drive was the same for all of us, we used the time alongside our studies to get to know the Polish culture and occasional weekends to travel around Poland and explore other Polish cities.
I took this photo in Stockholm on 29 October 2022. Exactly one month after I started my Erasmus semester in Gdansk. At that time, All Saints' Day, Wszystkich Świętych, was celebrated in Poland and we had a few days off. So we spontaneously decided to travel to Stockholm, where this photo was taken.
The picture fits the theme of wanderlust, as it shows a view through the streets of Stockholm into the distance. In the centre of the picture is the brightly shining sun on the horizon, which is why I gave the picture the title "Light on the horizon". It alludes to the horizon that we are trying to expand at Erasmus. But it also fits, as it was created on a short trip to Stockholm with many Erasmus friends. Friends who didn't even know each other a month before and for whom wanderlust was an important motivation for their Erasmus semester. Where, if not through Erasmus, can you find friends with whom you can travel Europe together just a few weeks after meeting them for the first time?
Frederike Bossy:
The photo was taken on a weekend trip to the small Dolomites, which are not far from Padua. We were travelling in my Italian flatmate's car. It can't be mistaken for any other car as it's covered in stickers everywhere. Why? Because he likes it. The flatmate I mentioned always said "home is where my car is parked". I think back to those times with nostalgia. When I look at the faces of me and my friends in the photos, I see a certain expression on them. There is a certain freedom. Carefree. I feel wanderlust. For travelling. Of being on the road. Of shedding duties, social responsibilities, societal expectations and global worries that we can't change anyway. It wasn't all good, but we were good. We were there. On our way. Together. And yet each on our own.
"Wanderlust", or "longing for distant places": Some people have it, some don't. Some people never go away and are happy. But others have this longing deep inside them. Where does it come from? The need to explore the distance, to be far away. To lose yourself in the distance, like the road in the photo gets lost in the fog. And at the same time to reinvent and find yourself. There is a clear path, but in addition to the village, forest and fields, there is so much to discover to the right and left of the path that we can't even imagine from here. And we will only find out when we follow the path.
For me, this slightly mystical photo with the low-hanging clouds between the mountains and the blue sky is an expression of being on the road. Leaving the past behind and setting off. We explore new things. We enjoy being; the now; that we are here. We enjoy the views that present themselves to us. The moments that life offers us.
I chose this photo because it evokes all these associations in me and reminds me of what a beautiful country Italy is and how free and close to the distance I felt there during my semester abroad. Pure wanderlust.

The picture shows northern lights in Gällivare, Lapland. Even though I mainly spent my semester abroad in Stockholm, I immediately thought of this picture when I was choosing a photo because it is associated with such wonderful memories. The picture was taken at the beginning of March on a trip to Swedish Lapland and is one of my favourite pictures from my time in Sweden. On the one hand, you can see the beautiful Swedish landscape with the red Swedish houses and many woods - even if only partially due to the darkness. In addition, the Northern Lights are incredibly strong. I've never experienced such an incredible natural phenomenon before, so it was such a great experience to see them with my own eyes and even capture them in a photo. I also had this experience and the trip to Lapland with a group of people I didn't know that well before the holiday and who became good friends within a few days. That evening, when we spent minutes staring at the sky together outside our rented Swedish cottage and watching the Northern Lights brought us even closer together. I therefore associate the photo not only with an incredible natural phenomenon, but also with friendships that have shaped the rest of my time in Sweden and made it even more beautiful. Partly because of the experience of seeing the Northern Lights, Sweden has become one of my favourite places. That's why this photo fits the theme of "wanderlust" for me. It was taken in a place that is several thousand kilometres away from my home, but one that I will still long for often.
