Initial Situation and Problem

The production of flat rolled steel products is a customer individual production. Individual customer orders as well as the resulting individual production orders are identified by individual specifications regarding alloy, higly specific dimensions as well as unit weights. The ability to produce niche products in terms of unusual or challenging dimensions leads to strategic competitive advantages. Nevertheless, production systems are not able to fulfil each and every customer specification. A tool for an a-priori restriction test of individual customer orders is missing. Besides, cost and perfomance implications of challenging customer products cannot be determined.

Objective and Approach

The aim of the project is the development of a tool for an a-priori test of the producability of a cusomer order regarding process restrictions as well as the determination of the realted cost and performance implications. Doing so, six work packages were carried out:

  • Survey of the production processes
  • Analysis of the network structure of the production system
  • Disaggregation of production processes into modules to describe the transformation of material
  • Classification and unified modelling based on activity analysis of transformation modules
  • Development of unified combinatorial structures to model arbitrary production systems
  • Problem-specific parameterization of selected modules
  • Problem-specific integration and combination of parameterized modules
  • Verification of the model structure
  • Prototypical software implementation for a dynamic, customer-individual modelling
