Professor Thomas S. Spengler was nominated by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany at the joint recommendation of the German Research Foundation, the Max Planck Society, the German Rectors' Conference, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Fraunhofer Society and the Leibniz Association to serve as the most important science policy advisor to the federal government and the federal state governments in Germany for a period of three years retrospectively from 1st February. Congratulations!
The members of the Science Council combine scientific excellence with science policy competence and experience. Characteristic of the work of the members is the interdisciplinary approach, which takes into account the entire German science system. The spectrum of tasks ranges from competitive assessments, such as the excellence strategy, research infrastructure and research buildings, to the evaluation of research institutions and accreditation procedures, such as the awarding of doctoral degrees.
