In the Research Center for Nanometrology, the Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology (LENA), research groups work together on important questions of measurement in the nanoworld using state-of-the-art technical infrastructure and expertise from electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering and chemistry. The PTB is a strategic partner of LENA.
The research building on the campus of the TUBS at Langer Kamp was financed by the Federal Government and the State of Lower Saxony within the framework of the joint initiative "New Research Buildings" and could be moved into in spring 2019. In the LENA, laboratories and offices for more than 100 employees were built for about 33 million Euros on a total of 2574 m².
Precise and quantitative measurements of nanoscale structures are not only the basis for a better understanding of the smallest structures, but are also a prerequisite for better standardisation and ultimately for the transfer of nanoscale materials, methods and systems from research laboratories to industrial use. In particular, LENA will focus on the precise measurement of three-dimensional objects. This is needed, for example, for novel nano LEDs or better high-performance accumulators for future electric vehicles. Nanoscale technologies are also needed to investigate and understand the role of nanoparticles in our environment. Ubiquitous, i.e. sensors and standards available everywhere, should put nanoparticle measurement technology on a completely new footing and serve as a basis for rapid tests on the nanoscale.
