A virtual server is a form of server virtualization in which a physical piece of hardware is split into multiple virtual instances. Each virtual server behaves like an independent dedicated server and allows users to run operating systems, applications and other resources independently. The Gauss IT Center provides a small free virtual web server to each institute and institution (see DL4205 of the service catalog).
